Hong Kong Strong

Nov. 1, 2019

It’s not famous like the Monster Building or the Kowloon Walled City, but it’s more original. So original, I don’t even know its name.

A friend asked, when he found out I was going to Hong Kong, if I would be joining the protests. I laughed.

“Why the fu*k would I do that?” I said.

He suggested that I would be supporting the “good guys” in this huge dispute over the extradition law to China. I told him he’s crazy and assured him that my purpose for going to Hong Kong is to get the battery in my laptop replaced and buy a new iPhone. And, while I’m there, I would eat a lot of good food and take a lot of cool pictures.

Mission accomplished.

That’s not to say I don’t empathize with the people of Hong Kong. I do. But I avoid fighting other people’s battles for them, especially on foreign soil. I’m not a journalist anymore. I don’t seek justice. I just adjust to whatever is happening around me.

In this case, I did that by using the Food Panda app to order my dinner one night. I heard there would be protests in the neighborhood where I was staying so I didn’t leave the apartment.

I was extra cautious because part of my trip included a foray into China, to visit a good friend from back home who teaches in Shenzhen. Yes, I was in full Switzerland mode. Friends with everyone.

So, some quick highlights:

1. Average sushi in Hong Kong is about the equal of top-line sushi in Vietnam. And the better sushi in the former British territory almost matches the omakase I had in South Korea.

2. The iPhone 11 Pro is definitely the best smartphone Apple has produced so far, but there are some minor bugs. I’m hoping a future software update will take care of them.

3. My Macbook Air is as good as new. No more battery dying after 10 minutes without being connected to a power source.

As for China, find out in my next post…
